Local students recognized by Houston Youth Symphony
Two winners from the Houston Youth Symphony Concerto Competition will be featured at the HYS Winter Concert to be held at 4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 27 at Rice University's Shepard School of Music Stude Concert Hall.
According to a press release, senior John Humphrey, from Oak Ridge High School, will perform the Allegro movement from Richard Strauss's Horn Concerto No. 1 in E-flat Major with the HYS Philharmonia. Junior Gabriel Maffuz-Anker, from Houston's High School for the Performing and Visual Arts, will perform Henryk Wieniawski's Violin Concerto No. 2 in D Minor, Op. 22 with the HYS.
Humphrey began playing the trumpet when he was 10 years old and the French horn shortly afterward while Maffuz-Anker started playing the violin when he was 3 years old.
Tickets for the concert are $15 and can be purchased online at www.houstonyouthsymphony.com or the day of the concert at the Shepherd School box office.
