Bike to Work Day approaches

The first Bike to Work Day of 2012 is set for Friday, April 13.

Bicyclists throughout Houston will begin their trek to work at participating bike shops or Memorial Park with Mayor Annise Parker and reconvene at City Hall to meet with Mayor Parker at 8 a.m.

Mayor Parker will hold a press conference at approximately 8:15 a.m.

Bike to Work Day was created to promote bicycling in Houston and give participants chance to meet with elected city officials.

The April 13 event is the first of three Bike to Work Days to be held in 2012.

The forthcoming Bike to Work Days will feature a ride in the Energy Corridor on May 17 and a ride to the new Texas Medical Center on May 18.

Bicyclists are urged to prepare their bikes and clothing the night before the event.

Participating bike shops include: Bikesport, 2909 Joanel St. in Houston; West End Bikes, 5427 Blossom in Houston; Bike Barn, 5935 Kirby Drive in Houston; Blue Line Bike Lab, 3302 White Oak Drive in Houston; Bicycle World and Fitness, 2519 Rice Blvd. in Houston; and Daniel Boone Cycles, 5318 Crawford St. in Houston.

Memorial Park is located at 6501 Memorial Drive in Houston.
