Periwinkle Foundation raises $180K through Iron Sommelier event
published Apr. 28, 2011
The Periwinkle Foundation's annual Iron Sommelier event recently raised $180,000.
This year's program included 13 noted sommeliers from Houston restaurants and wine bars competing for two awards: Iron Sommelier 2011 and the People’s Choice Award.
Each sommelier chooses three wines from a specific wine area or type of wine to focus on for the evening. The judging criteria included wine selection, presentation, creativity and knowledge.
The Iron Sommelier 2011 went to Sean Beck of Backstreet Café, Hugo's and Trevisio. The second runner-up was Evan Turner of Fox Hollow Gastro Lounge and Chorio. And, the third runner-up was Ben Roberts of Masraff’s.
The People's Choice Award, chosen by 300-plus guests, went to Bryan Davis of Haven Restaurant.
The evening also included continuous wine tastings, entertainment from a jazz ensemble, a children's art sale and a Big Board auction featuring art from The Periwinkle Foundation's 20th Anniversary "Making A Mark" collection, featuring guest artists John Palmer, Kelly Gale Amen, Kermit Eisenhut, Jonatan Lopez and more.
Money raised at the event will be used to support The Periwinkle Foundation's programs that change the lives of children, young adults and families who are challenged by cancer and other life-threatening illnesses and are cared for at Texas Children's Hospital.
